A Christian woman convert greeted by Paul (Rom. 16:7); NJB renders ‘Junias’, which is masculine—a name not found elsewhere. If ‘Junia’, with most recent translations, is preferred, she may have been the wife of Andronicus. Paul was at one time imprisoned with them, and observes that they are prominent among the apostles; here ‘apostles’ must be used in its wider sense, beyond that of the Twelve [[➝ Twelve, the]] and Paul, to mean a further group with a commission and having an authority. It is significant that a woman is put into that category.
